Top 10 tips to save money on electric heating

Top 10 tips to save money on electric heating

1.    Programme your thermostat:
It’s essential you programme your thermostat, so the heater only comes on when you are in the house – check your thermostat manual on how to do this.

2.    Keep all windows and doors closed:
Doing this will preserve heat in rooms around the house and keep them warm for much longer.

3.    Don’t have other rooms switched on if you’re not using them:
This can lead to a massive increase in your bills as you will be warming spaces you aren’t using which is wasting your energy. – only turn heaters on if you are in the room

4.    Take measures before putting on the heating:
Put on some fluffy socks, a jumper, or a warm blanket.

5.    Make sure you have an efficient heater so there is no energy wastage:
Some heaters aren’t 100% efficient for example some gas boilers are only 90% efficient therefore in theory you are losing 10% of your money. – all electric appliances are 100% efficient, which means you will pay for every kW you use

6.    Retain heat with good insulation of doors and windows:
For example, double glazing on your windows.

7.    Replace your radiators, towel rails and floor heating with energy-saving ones:
Even though this will be a bigger investment at first it will save you money quickly as energy prices are unlikely to come down for the foreseeable future.

8.    Save by maintaining the right temperature – don’t overheat:
This can be done by keeping your heating on for a set time and not for long periods.

9.    Try building credit with your energy provider:
Most energy providers will actually pay you not to use electricity at peak times. By building credit, you can use this to reduce future payments.

10.  Get the right-sized radiator for your room:
This is done by taking the measurements of the room and seeing what kW you need.
It is important to get the right size as if you get a kW too big then it will be overheating your room and you will be paying more for it.
