A lot has happened in the world of energy and heating this month.
From rising bills to regulations and government schemes, it’s clearer than ever that change is coming, whether we’re ready or not.
Whether you manage a home, a business, or an entire portfolio of properties, staying ahead of these changes can help you plan smarter and save money.
So, if you’re still running an old gas boiler, thinking about making a switch, or just trying to keep up with the constant policy ping-pong, here are the 5 key things worth knowing right now.
Let’s break it down.
As of April, the Ofgem energy price cap rose by 6.4%, reaching £1,849 for a typical dual-fuel household. (This simply means they get both gas and electricity from the same supplier).
Why? Because wholesale prices have risen again, meaning higher bills for anyone on a standard variable tariff.
Some energy providers (like EDF) are now offering fixed deals under the cap so it’s worth looking around before settling. No matter what tariff you use, one thing’s for sure: your heating system needs to be as efficient as possible to keep costs down.
With another election on the horizon, Net Zero targets are suddenly in the spotlight.
Some parties are calling for a pause on Net Zero, arguing that clean energy policies are affecting industry. Others are saying that we can’t afford to go backwards, especially after the price shocks over the past few years.
Whatever your own view, the debate is heating up. Currently, there is no major policy U-turn planned. The future still points towards renewables, energy independence in the UK, and smarter systems at home.
This is a big one!
From 2027, the government wants the majority of new homes in England to come with solar panels as standard.
Yes, it’ll cost more upfront, as it adds around £3000 to £4000 to the build cost. However, the argument is that homeowners could save over £1000 a year on energy bills, so will make the investment back within 3-4 years.
Already living in an older home? Loans and grants are in the works to help people retrofit solar panels too. So if your roof is at the right angle, now might be the time to start exploring your solar panel options.
Upgrading homes just got smarter and easier, as the government’s plan is rapidly expanding.
New technologies like heat batteries are being tested, offering more flexible ways (like leasing, for example), and setting aside millions to train new installers.
March 2025 saw a record number of heat pump grant applications, showing that more families are making the switch.
Why it matters: If you’re considering a heating upgrade, there are now more options, and funding, than ever to help you do it.
And while heat pumps are grabbing headlines, they’re not the only option. Smart electric radiators, infrared panels, and hybrid systems are all being explored as viable alternatives, depending on the space and setup.
Starting this April, boiler manufacturers are being pushed to clean up their act. The government has launched the ‘Clean Heat Market Mechansim’ (CHMM). This says that if you sell gas boilers, you also need to sell heat pumps.
The initial target is 6%. So for every 100 boilers sold, 6 must be heat pumps. And if they miss the target, a fine will be charged.
This rule is aimed at manufacturers, not homeowners, so you don’t need to panic if you’re on gas. But it does mean that the industry is shifting.
So what should we expect? More innovation, more offers on heat pumps, and more support for other gas alternatives, like electric heating.
There’s a lot to take in from April, and a lot is still changing.
But there is one clear thing; home heating is shifting fast. And the people who stay one step ahead with smarter systems, better controls, and energy-efficient choices, are the ones who’ll benefit the most.
We’ll keep tracking these changes so that you don’t have to, and if you’re ready to chat through heating options for your home, we’re always here.
